What are you reading at the moment?

The Secret Teachings of All Ages by Manly P. Hall

Do you like garlic or not?

Food without garlic is barely food.

Beatles or Stones?

I have never, not even once, listened to the Stones on purpose.

If you had one day to live what would you do?

Enjoy a meal with friends and family, then go out into the woods alone. Walk, sit, listen, watch, exist.

It is 2097 and your piece is played to an audience of 14 robots, 35 people, and 76 animals of varying sorts, how will they all react and what do you want them to feel?

I’m assuming by that point brain-computer interfaces will be so common and widespread, I’ll be able to program audience reactions and emotions as part of the score. The cyborgs and animal-human hybrids will be jumping out of their seats streaming tears of ecstasy whether they want to or no.

If you could invent a new instrument what would it look like and how would it sound?

An electronic instrument that uses simple hand gestures like a theremin but with haptic feedback gloves to introduce a feeling of resistance or pull depending on harmonies and timbres. A brain-computer interface combined with a Large Music Model would allow the instrument to sound like anything ever recorded or what the musician thinks of including sounds no one had ever heard before.

In an ideal world when and how should people listen to your music?

In a concert hall, at home, in the club, in prison, anywhere really. Main thing is that it’s live, that there are live musicians actually playing their instruments and that the audience focuses on the performance without distractions.

Your favourite place to compose: a cave, an attic, a café, on the train, or are you inspired everywhere?

Movement is very important. Walking, driving, riding the train, main thing is change. I used to love sitting in cafes watching the people, always inspiring to observe human behavior, but it’s almost impossible to find a cafe that doesn’t play music these days.

Do you sleep on your back, front, or side?

Always wanted to sleep on my back, lifelong dream. Front only.

What is your biggest dream and what is your biggest fear?

Becoming famous for my art

What bores you?

Making money
